The end of the year always brings a host of ideas to our minds on what we want 2019 to be like. We create these crazy resolutions that we really want to change but fall through after a couple weeks, heck for me it’s days. So are resolutions worth it? Are they just another fad?
Resolutions can be worth it and more than a fad, if you are committed and make serious effort. It also helps if you are realistic and remember nothing will change over night. It took a long time for you to develop the habit you are trying to change, give yourself adequate time to change it.
I’m queen of giving myself a week or two to see a difference from working out then getting upset when I can’t tell a difference. Most of the time I flat out give up. Change is slow and takes time. Nothing happens overnight and definitely not in two weeks.
The new year is meant for a time of reflection. To think about your behaviors and set positive goals for the next year.
How to crush your goal
Start small, for instance, if you wanna exercise try working out 1-2 times a week and then after 3 weeks or so add one more or two if you feel like you can do it. If you want to eat healthier, replace dessert with fruit or yogurt. Eating healthier doesn’t have to be a punishment and neither does working out.
Try to only change one behavior at a time, again it took along time for you to get where you are, so give yourself time to overcome it. Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to purge all things you wanna change at once. Once you feel comfortable with one goal, try another. Small attainable goals are more likely to be completed than one massive goal starting January 1st.
Give yourself adequate time. Try setting your goal for 4-6 weeks. This gives you plenty of time to get slip ups out of your system and build a nice routine. Remember every goal does not need to start January first for it to matter!
Talk about it
Tell everyone you trust about your resolution. Create yourself a support group or a group who wants to reach the same goal.
Lastly, don’t beat yourself up! Minor stumbles are going to happen! It takes a full 30 days to really break a habit but even then it can be tempting. Slip ups happen and having one brownie for dessert one night doesn’t mean you have to give up. Hang in there and push forward. Ask for support if you need it, it’s okay to have accountability partners.
Resolutions are possible and attainable. So write that resolution down and hang it somewhere you look everyday like the mirror. Make 2019 your own!
